Bali’s Karang Lestari Pemuteran Project
Earns ASEANTA Award for Excellence

Bali, Indonesia, February 3, 2005Agung Prana accepted the 2005 ASEAN Tourism Association Excellence Award for the Best ASEAN Conservation Effort, on behalf of the Karang Lestari Pemuteran coral preservation foundation of North Bali. The award was presented by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Hj Mohd Najib on January 25 in Lankawi, Malaysia, at the Opening Ceremony for the ASEAN Tourism Forum.

Mr. Prana is founder and chairman of the conservation project, immediate past chairman of the Association of Indonesian Travel Agents Bali chapter and a 2004 nominee for the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Environmental Award.

Karang Lestari is a unique community-based coral restoration project that uses electricity to increase coral growth and resistance to environmental stresses. While restoring reef habitats to their natural beauty, the method increases fisheries for sustainable ecotourism and economic development. Karang Lestari now is the world’s largest coral restoration project and is becoming one of the most important coral restoration research facilities in the world.

This is the 19th year for the ASEANTA Awards for Excellence in Tourism, given to recognize individuals and organizations that have contributed to the development and promotion of ASEAN tourism products. There were nine categories of awards for 2005 for the best travel article, tourism poster, marketing and promotional campaign, airline program, poster, tour package, new tourist attraction and cultural preservation effort.

The Best Conservation effort award was based on preservation of national heritage or natural environment/ecology in the interest of tourism development. Judges looked at current or potential tourism interests to be generated by this conservation effort; value to the nation, apart from tourism development; value to ASEAN in enhancing the region as a tourist destination; cost; and efforts made to generate interest or promote the project as a tourist attraction.

Karang Lestari has received previous awards: Skal Ecotourism Award 2002 for the world’s best ecotourism project; Indonesia’s KONAS Award for the best community-based coastal management; and Indonesia’s most prestigious environmental award, Kalpataru/Adiputra.
